This is the best apple cobbler recipe - made completely from scratch! A sweet and perfectly spiced apple filling is baked beneath a rich, buttery biscuit topping to bubbly perfection and served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F & grease a 9 x 9” baking dish.
Make the filling:
Peel apples.
Slice them into thin slices, then cut each slice in half so it’s about 1” long.
Place the prepared apples in a microwave safe dish, cover and cook for 5 minutes, until apples are slightly soft.
Once apples are finished cooking in the microwave, put them in a colander to drain excess water. Let them cool in the colander for at least 5 minutes.
While apples are in the microwave, in a small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and sea salt.
Transfer cooled & drained apples to a bowl, add lemon juice, vanilla and dry ingredient mixture and stir to combine.
Spread in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
Make the cobbler topping:
In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.
In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla and whole milk.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredient mixture and stir to combine.
Spread topping over apple mixture in the baking dish.
Bake & Cool
Bake at 375 for 30-35 minutes or until biscuits are lightly browned & set and the filling is bubbling.

Notes
Ingredient Substitution NotesApple Filling
Apples. Choose your favorite apple variety, I prefer a sweet/tart variety like pink ladies or granny smith.
Light brown sugar. Use dark brown sugar for a stronger molasses taste.
Granulated Sugar. You can substitute the granulated sugar with additional brown sugar.
All-purpose flour. Cornstarch or an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend both work well.
Cobbler Topping
All-purpose flour. cake flour is a good substitute. All-purpose gluten-free baking flour should work well too.
Salted butter. Unsalted butter works well.
Granulated sugar. use regular white sugar or organic cane sugar.
Salted Butter. Unsalted butter or vegan butter can be used in place of salted butter, other than that I don’t recommend making substitutions.
Whole Milk. 2% milk and half and half also work well.
Vanilla extract. This is one of the ingredients that makes this apple cobbler topping stand out from the rest. You could substitute vanilla bean paste or the seeds from one vanilla bean.
Store/FreezeStore leftover apple cobbler in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 2 months.Reheat in the microwave, or in the oven set to "warm" until heated through.
