Did you know that many (most) household cleaners on the market contain toxic ingredients? I wasn’t aware of just how toxic the ingredients were until I started researching clean products a few years ago. What I found was disheartening.
The products that are supposed to clean our homes are actually negatively effecting our health. And when you have lots of young children who put their mouths and hands on every surface in your home, the products you use really matter.
Many contain chemicals and fragrances that contain known carcinogens (substances that cause cancer), endocrine disruptors (chemicals that mimic hormones and can lead to many problems such as fertility issues), and neurotoxins (which affect brain activity and can cause headaches & more).
This is why I started using Thieves cleaner – which is made of plant-based and naturally derived ingredients that clean without using toxic ingredients. Shop: Thieves Cleaner supplies. Check out this post: getting started with essential oils.

Toxic Ingredients in Conventional Cleaning Products
Here are just four of the dozens of harmful chemicals in many cleaning products. See sources at the end of the post for more information on these chemicals.
- Bleach and ammonia. Both produce toxic fumes that cause lung damage. When combined, they produce chloramine gas which can be deadly.
- Phthalates. Phthalates are carcinogenic chemicals in cleaners and laundry detergents that bind chemicals and make fragrance last longer. When absorbed into the skin or inhaled they are dangerous and can affect fertility, hormone function, etc.
- 2-Butoxyethanol. Found in window, kitchen and multipurpose cleaners, but is not required to be listed on a productโs label. It causes sore throats when inhaled, at high levels it can also contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema, and severe liver and kidney damage.
- Formaldehyde. Found in some cleaners, is a strong neurotoxin that damages the nervous system.
The Thieves Difference
Now onto why I choose to clean my home with Thieves cleaner. It’s made with thieves essential oil, which is a blend of clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus, all of which are some of the best oils for cleaning. Thieves is:
- Non- toxic
- Phthalate-free.
- Fragrance free.
- Made with biodegradable ingredients derived from plant starch, coconuts, etc.
I use one bottle of Thieves concentrate to many many different cleaning supplies I use daily in my home, including this all-purpose thieves cleaner.

Hello question for you please… What does one capful of the thieves oil measure out to in teaspoons?
Thank you so much for posting this recipe exactly what I’m looking for!
I recently purchased some Thieves cleaner for the first time and while I like the scent overall, I find the cinnamon bark or *something* a bit too strong. It reminds me of a Christmas scent (which isnโt a bad thing, but just not what I consider a clean fresh scent when cleaning). Does adding some additional oils like you mentioned help change the scent quite a bit?
