Homemade waffles are our weekly Saturday morning breakfast (usually made by my husband to give me a morning off).
Whenever he wants to make them extra special, he whips up this chocolate chip waffles recipe. Because let’s be honest, everything is better when you add chocolate – including waffles.
These chocolate chip waffles are made with butter, applesauce, vanilla and cinnamon and cooked to golden-brown perfection. Serve them with a pat of honey butter, maple syrup or homemade whipped cream for a delicious breakfast treat.
They freeze beautifully and are easily reheated in the toaster for a
Chocolate Chip Waffles: Ingredients & Substitutions
- All-purpose flour. You can substitute up to half of the flour with whole wheat pastry flour or white whole wheat flour. Or, use a 1:1 all-purpose gluten-free flour to make them gluten-free.
- Whole Milk. 2% milk or half and half are good substitutes.
- Granulated sugar. White sugar or organic cane sugar are great choices. Coconut sugar also works well.
- Applesauce. canola oil is the best substitute for applesauce.
- Salted Butter. unsalted butter or coconut oil work well!
- Mini chocolate chips. I recommend using mini chips in this recipe. You can “make” mini chips by pulsing regular chocolate chips in a food processor 1 or 2 times.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Waffles
Let’s walk through this recipe together step-by-step! You can also watch the video for additional guidance, or ask me your questions in the comment section!
Begin by preheating a waffle maker to medium heat (on our waffle maker we use “3”).
Then, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, sea salt and cinnamon in a medium bowl and set the dry ingredients aside.
Next, separate the egg whites from yolks (make sure to save both parts of the egg). Put the yolks in a small bowl and set aside.
Then, put the egg whites in the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the wire whisk attachment, or in a large bowl (to beat by hand or with a hand mixer) and beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Then, transfer the beaten egg whites to a bowl and set aside in the refrigerator.
Next, add the egg yolks and butter to the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the wire whisk attachement, and mix on medium speed until combined.
Then, add the milk, applesauce and vanilla extract and beat until combined.
Once the mixture is smooth, add the dry ingredients and beat until incorporated.
Then, fold the beaten egg whites into the batter by hand with a spatula.
Next, stir in the mini chocolate chips by hand.
Cook the Chocolate Chip Waffles
Spray the preheated waffle maker lightly with non-stick spray or oil and scoop 1 cup of batter into the center of the waffle plates.
Cook the waffles on medium heat for 5-8 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown.
Repeat with remaining batter until it has all been used.
If you’d like to serve all the waffles at once, keep them warm in the oven.
Preheat the oven to “warm” setting (which is usually about 250 degrees Fahrenheit or 121 degrees Celsius) and put each batch of waffles on a large baking sheet in the warm oven until ready to serve.
Serve
Serve warm with butter (or cinnamon honey butter), syrup, homemade whipped cream, or your favorite toppings. I personally love spreading them with peanut butter then drizzling with maple syrup!
We love serving these chocolate chip waffles with savory breakfast recipes like oven baked bacon, egg casserole, or a delicious omelette.
Store
Let leftover chocolate chip waffles cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the toaster for the best results!
How to Freeze Waffles
I suggest freezing these chocolate chip waffles to keep them fresh. Put cooled waffles in a single layer in an airtight container and freeze for up to 2 months.
Then, you can reheat the waffles from frozen using the “defrost” setting on your toaster!
Chocolate Chip Waffles Recipe FAQS
Yes, we usually double this recipe to feed our family and have leftovers!
Yes you can. I suggest using mini chocolate chips because they are more likely to remain in the batter and not stick to the waffle maker.
Folding in beaten egg whites to the batter makes waffles light and crispy. Also, preheating the waffle iron properly before cooking.
This recipe does not require resting, however you can let the batter rest overnight in the refrigerator before cooking if you’d like.
