I’m a huge fan of smoothies, and this kale fruit smoothie is one of our favorites. It’s incredibly easy, super fresh and is ready in mere minute!

This kale and fruit smoothie is made with four simple ingredients: milk, fruit, banana and kale (of course), The frozen banana makes it thick and creamy and naturally sweetens the smoothie. The fruit adds additional sweetness and flavor and the kale blends right in undetected, for a healthy smoothie that doesn’t taste healthy at all!

One of the best things about this kale smoothie recipe is that it’s super customizable. You can easily add in some nutrition boosters like protein powder, chia seeds, greek yogurt, etc. to make it your own!

  • Almond Milk. Any milk – dairy or nondairy – works well in this recipe. Coconut milk, whole milk, etc.
  • Frozen Banana. I never make a smoothie without a frozen banana. It adds creaminess and keeps the smoothie nice and thick.
  • Frozen Fruit. Choose your favorite fruit. If you want the smoothie to be green then choose a light colored fruit like pineapple or mango. Other options include strawberries, mixed berries, grapefruit, oranges, etc.
  • Kale leaves. I prefer using frozen kale because again – it makes the smoothie thick without needing to add ice. You can use fresh or frozen with great results. Make sure to use the leaves – not the bitter stems.
  • Add Ins: These are optional but taste great and add some nutrition: protein powder, Greek yogurt, honey, chia seeds, etc.

How to Make a Kale and Fruit Smoothie

Let’s walk through this kale smoothie recipe together, and don’t forget to watch the video for additional guidance. Begin by putting ingredients into the container of a Vitamix blender (or another high-powered blender) in the order listed.

Whenever you make a smoothie, It’s important to add the liquid first. This ensure it blends smoothly.

Then, start blending on low speed and increase to high speed (quickly). Blend the kale smoothie on high speed for 30 to 50 seconds until mixture is smooth. Blend time will depend greatly on if you are using frozen or fresh ingredients. If they are all frozen, blend time will be longer than if they are fresh.

Serve

Pour into 2 to 4 glasses (depending on how many people you’re sharing it with, if anyone), and serve immediately.

I always enjoy my smoothies alongside another healthy breakfast recipes like cottage cheese pancakes or peanut butter banana baked oatmeal.

Store/Freeze

I suggest drinking this kale fruit smoothie right away. However, you could freeze it in a glass jar for up to 1 month. Make sure to leave room at the top of the jar for the smoothie to expand as it freezes.

Kale and Fruit Smoothie Recipe FAQS

Can I use greens that aren’t kale?

If you want to make a smoothie with different greens, try my green smoothie recipe or spinach smoothie.

Can you taste the kale in a kale fruit smoothie?

With this recipe, you cannot taste the kale at all. The fruit is the main flavor in this recipe, and the kale is just a nutritional bonus. If you use more than 1 cup of kale you might be able to taste it, so be sure to follow the recipe.

Should I use fresh or frozen fruit in a kale fruit smoothie?

I always use frozen fruit in my smoothies. If you use fresh, you will get a thinner smoothie, or you will have to add ice to thicken it.

Do I need to remove the stems from kale before blending?

Yes absolutely, just add the kale leaves not the stems.

How can I add more protein to this smoothie?

You can add a scoop of protein powder, chia seeds, or up to ¼ cup greek yogurt.

Can I substitute spinach for kale in this smoothie?

Yes you can use spinach if you prefer.
