Ground Beef Stir Fry: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Ground beef. I use 85/15% ground beef, but you can use a 93/7% lean ground beef, or even ground chicken or turkey – you’ll just need to cook it in some oil.
  • Vegetables. You really can use any vegetables you prefer in this recipe – making it a great “clean out the fridge” dinner too.
  • Soy sauce. Low sodium and regular both work well.
  • Minced ginger. ¼ teaspoon of powdered ginger works well in place of minced.
  • Sesame oil. Critical for the most authentic flavor, but can be substituted with peanut oil if you must.
  • Honey. Brown sugar is a great substitute for honey.
  • Mirin. Rice vinegar works in place of mirin.

How to Make Ground Beef Stir Fry

I’m going to show you how to make this recipe step-by-step, and don’t forget to watch the video.

Start by making the sauce: just whisk all the ingredients together and set it aside.

Then, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the ground beef is no longer pink. Stir it often and break it into small pieces as it cooks.

When the ground beef isn’t pink anymore, add the veggies and sesame oil and cook until the vegetables just start to become soft (about 5-8 minutes), stirring often. Cover the pot between stirring sessions to help the veggies cook faster.

Next, stir in the sauce and cook, uncovered, for 3-5 minutes, or until it starts to thicken.

Then, mix the cornstarch and water (can be mixed in the same container used to mix the sauce).
