I always prefer to make coffee drinks, like this homemade pumpkin spice latte, at home.

This homemade pumpkin spice latte is made with real pumpkin and sweetened with maple syrup – which means it contains no artificial flavors or dyes, and no refined sugar.

It tastes like a gourmet pumpkin latte from your favorite coffee shop for a fraction of the price.

Pumpkin Spice Latte: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Pumpkin puree. Canned or homemade puree both work well in this recipe.
  • Maple syrup. Use pure maple syrup for the best results, honey is a great substitute.
  • Vanilla extract. 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste can be used in place of extract, if desired.
  • Pumpkin pie spice. I suggest making homemade pumpkin pie spice!
  • Whole milk. Possible substitutions include half and half, 2% milk, or full-fat coconut milk (for a dairy-free version).

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

We will walk through how to make a pumpkin spice latte step-by-step, and don’t forget to watch the video.

Begin by brewing the espresso or strong coffee.

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte - brewed espresso

While the espresso is brewing, make the pumpkin spice syrup. To do this, whisk together the pumpkin puree, maple syrup, vanilla extract and pumpkin pie spice in a small mixing bowl with a pour spout or a 4-cup glass measuring cup.

Then, add the espresso to the pumpkin mixture and whisk to combine.

Froth the whole milk in a milk frother, or with a handheld frother.

At this point you can proceed with the recipe in 1 of two ways:

Make a Large Batch

First, you can make a large batch of the latte in the large mixing bowl and then divide it between mugs (pictured here). Or…

Make Individual Servings

Second, you can put the espresso mixture into mugs then add the frothed milk (a good choice if you want to do latte art).

Serve

Pour into mugs and serve hot with homemade whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice!

Store

If you have leftover pumpkin spice latte you can store it in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat it when you want to drink it. Note, it won’t be as foamy as when it was fresh but it will still taste delicious.

How to Make a Large Batch of Pumpkin Spice Syrup

If you want to make pumpkin lattes more often, you can prepare a large batch of the pumpkin spice “syrup” to have on hand to use throughout the week.

Combine the following ingredients together in a  glass jar with a lid. Store the mixture in the refrigerator until you’re ready to make a latte. Use 2 TBS pumpkin spice syrup for every 1 cup whole milk.

  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
