This homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe is easy to make and use in your favorite pumpkin recipes. Learn how to make pumpkin pie spice to use as a store-bought pumpkin pie spice substitute.

Are you trying to bake a delicious pumpkin recipe that calls for pumpkin pie spice but don't have any in your pantry? Well I have you covered with this delicious, 4-ingredient homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe!

I took my favorite store-bought spice and recreated it so I could make it whenever I needed to (which is often, especially in the fall).

This recipe takes minutes to make, and it will perfectly infuse your favorite pumpkin recipes (like pumpkin pie, pumpkin cake, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, etc.) with rich fall flavors.

    Pumpkin Pie Spice Ingredients

I highly suggest making this homemade pumpkin pie spice with organic spices to avoid all additives and preservatives.

I usually do a breakdown of all the ingredients in a recipe, however with this one I suggest adjusting the spices as desired if you'd like.

You can add ½ tsp ground allspice to the mixture, if you'd like. I prefer not to use it (my favorite store-bought variety does not contain allspice).

How to make pumpkin pie spice

I don't think this recipe could be any simpler - which is one of the many reasons why it's so great. We'll walk through how to make pumpkin pie spice step-by-step, and don't forget to watch the video.

Begin by combining the spices together in a medium-small bowl. A larger bowl makes the mixture easier to stir without spilling.

Next, stir the spices until they are completely combined and the mixture is homogenous (uniform throughout).

Then, use a small funnel to pour the seasoning into a 2.5 oz glass jar with a lid (in this post I used these jars, which are 2"/5 cm wide and 2.3"/6 cm tall). Or, if the mouth of the jar is large enough you can simply use a small spoon to transfer the mixture.

If you don't have a funnel and you're using a narrow jar, you can transfer the spice mixture to a piece of parchment paper or even a regular piece of paper, fold it and use the crease to carefully pour the taco seasoning into the jar.

    Store

Store the homemade pumpkin pie spice in a glass jar with a lid in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

Try to use spices that have similar expiration dates. I suggest writing down the earliest expiration date on the jar so you know how long it is good for.

    Make a Label

I suggest labeling the jar so you don't forget what spice is stored inside. I bought this embossing label maker for $15 and I love it. Use it to quickly create a label for your spice mixture.

Use in your favorite pumpkin recipes

Once you make this spice mixture, use it in your favorite pumpkin recipes. I bake with pumpkin all year long, here are some delicious pumpkin recipes:

    • What is more classic than pumpkin pie? Try these: homemade pumpkin pie, dairy-free pumpkin pie, mini vegan pumpkin pies.
    • These fudgy pumpkin brownies are the best.
    • You have to try this pumpkin cake - it's one of my all-time favorite cakes.
    • You can't go wrong with a cozy fall quick bread like pumpkin bread, healthy pumpkin bread, and paleo pumpkin bread.
    • My son likes these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies better than regular chocolate chip cookies! Gasp!
    • For breakfast try the best pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin scones, pumpkin cinnamon rolls, pumpkin overnight oats, pumpkin baked oatmeal or this pumpkin smoothie.
    • Muffins make a great grab-and-go breakfast, these are the best pumpkin muffins, or try these paleo pumpkin muffins.
    • Homemade pumpkin coffee creamer is so much better than store-bought.

    Recipe FAQS

    Can I double this recipe?

Yes, double the ingredients and store the mixture in a 5 oz jar with a lid.

What is pumpkin pie spice mix made of?

This recipe is made of ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg and ground ginger - you can also add ground allspice, if desired.

Can I use cinnamon instead of pumpkin pie spice?

No, there is cinnamon in pumpkin spice, but the other spices in the mixture really bring out the pumpkin flavor and are necessary for the best pumpkin recipes.

Can I substitute allspice for pumpkin pie spice?

No. Replacing pumpkin spice 1:1 with allspice is not a good choice.

What is a substitute for pumpkin pie spice?

This recipe is the perfect substitute - that's exactly what I created it for.
