This watermelon smoothie recipe is light and refreshing. A healthy and delicious way to cool off on a hot summer day, made with 5 ingredients in 3 minutes.

Watermelon Smoothie in three glass cups with slices of watermelon

We often find ourselves with lots of leftover watermelon after a summer BBQ, so I created this watermelon smoothie recipe as an easy & refreshing way to enjoy it.

This watermelon smoothie is made with 5 ingredients in less than 5 minutes! It's a healthy and light smoothie that's guaranteed to cool you down on a warm summer day.

Watermelon Smoothie Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

    • Almond Milk. you can also use coconut water, lite coconut milk, etc.
    • Frozen strawberries. You can use fresh strawberries, but in order to make a smoothie that's thick and cold (without adding ice) I suggest freezing them first.
    • Vanilla extract. you can use vanilla bean paste or omit if desired. However, if you're going for the creamsicle flavor definitely use vanilla!
    • Frozen Banana. Adding frozen banana to smoothies is my favorite way to sweeten a recipe and impart a creamy texture. Using frozen banana means that you don't need to add ice to make it thick and cold.
    • Lemon juice. I like the splash of acidity in this smoothie to cut through the sweetness of the watermelon. Lime juice is a good substitute too.

How to make a Watermelon Smoothie

We'll walk through how to make a watermelon smoothie step-by-step, and don't forget to watch the video.

    Use a Vitamix Blender

For thick & creamy smoothies I recommend using a Vitamix blender. Check out this Vitamix Buying Guide to learn why I chose Vitamix 10+ years ago and never looked back!

    Add ingredients to blending container

Begin by adding all the ingredients in the order listed in the watermelon smoothie recipe to the container of a Vitamix blender (or another high-powered blender).

It's important to add the watermelon and almond milk first, then add the frozen fruit, for easy blending.

    Watermelon Smoothie Recipe: Optional Add-Ins

If you'd like to add some nutrition boosters to this banana watermelon smoothie, here are some suggestions that can be added before blending:

    • More fruit. add your favorite summer fruits -pineapple, raspberries, oranges, blueberries, etc. to change the flavor if you'd like.
    • Greens. Adding 1 cup of spinach or power greens, won't effect the taste or texture of this smoothie at all. It will change the color, but it'll taste great and have a bonus serving of veggies!
    • Chia seeds.  a nutritional powerhouse that can be added to this tropical smoothie. I recommend adding 1-2 TBS and drinking the smoothie immediately.
    • Collagen. I love adding collagen protein powder to smoothies to add protein without changing the flavor.

    Blend

Next, secure the lid and blend the watermelon smoothie until it's smooth and uniform throughout. Use the tamper to press the ingredients to the blades (if using a Vitamix).

You may need to pause, scrape down the sides and continue blending to ensure your smoothie is thick and frozen and avoid over-blending. The mixture should be smooth but thick.

    Serve

Once blended, pour the strawberry watermelon smoothie into 2-4 glasses and serve immediately.

    Store/freeze

You can store this watermelon smoothie in a glass jar with a lid for up to 1 day in the refrigerator or 1 month in the freezer. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

    Recipe FAQS

    Can I double this recipe?

Yes! You can double the ingredients to make more smoothie! Just be sure to use a large blending container.

Can I add spinach to this watermelon smoothie?

Yes, add 1 cup of fresh or fresh-then-frozen spinach on top of the frozen fruit before blending. Note, this will change the color of this smoothie. Check out my Green Smoothie post for tips about freezing spinach.

I love this smoothie! I adore watermelon, but I never thought I would like it in a smoothie. I also love the tanginess from the lemon juice
