What is Matcha?

Matcha lattes are commonly called “matcha green tea lattes” because matcha is made by grounding shade-grown green tea leaves into a fine powder. Matcha was invented in Japan in the 15th century and is consumed by whisking the powder it into hot water.

Brewed green tea is different from matcha because with matcha you ingest the whole leaf, which contains antioxidants, chlorophyll, and L-theanine, all with great health benefits.

  • Vanilla extract. I love the flavor this adds to matcha lattes, you can omit it if you prefer.
  • Honey. granulated sugar, simple syrup or maple syrup are all great substitutes.

Then whisk the water and matcha powder together until the matcha powder is dissolved. You can use a small metal whisk, or a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen). Make sure there are no lumps at this point and the matcha is completely dissolved in the water.

Then whisk in honey and vanilla until the honey is dissolved.

Next, froth the milk in a milk frother and pour into matcha mixture in the mug. Or, you can froth the milk using a handheld frother and then pour it into the matcha mixture in your mug.

To Make an Iced Matcha Latte

Making a matcha iced latte is just like making it hot – except it’s mixed in a glass cup and ice is added at the end. So, start by putting the matcha powder and boiling water in a glass cup.

Then whisk the water and matcha powder together until the matcha powder is dissolved. Just like with a hot matcha latte, you can use a small metal whisk, or a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen). Make sure there are no lumps and the matcha is completely dissolved in the water.

Then, add the honey and vanilla and whisk until the honey is dissolved.

Note on Sweetener

You can use sugar, maple syrup, or simple syrup instead of honey if you prefer. Simple syrup is great because it dissolves well, even in cold liquids.

Next, froth the milk in a milk frother and pour into matcha mixture in the glass cup. Or, you can froth the milk using a handheld frother and then pour it into the matcha mixture in your mug.

Finally, add ice and let it cool down before you enjoy your iced matcha latte!

How to Store a Matcha Latte

If you have leftover latte, store it in a glass cup or jar with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Then, you can drink it cold over ice, or reheat it and serve it warm. Just note, the milk won’t be quite as frothy but it will still taste delicious.

Matcha Latte Recipe FAQS

What is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves. Unlike brewed green tea, you consume the entire leaf, which gives matcha its vibrant green color and a higher amount of antioxidants and caffeine.

Does a matcha latte have caffeine?

Yes, but it’s less than coffee.

What’s the best milk to use?

Honestly, just about any milk works well in this recipe. Whole milk and full-fat coconut milk make extra creamy matcha lattes. Almond milk and oat milk are delicious dairy-free options.

How do I prevent clumps in matcha?

First, you can sift the matcha powder before adding it to boiling water. Second, use a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen to whisk the powder into the boiling water.

Is this matcha latte sweet?

Using 1 Tablespoon of honey makes it only slightly sweet. You can omit the honey for an unsweetened latte, or add more to your tastes.
