This mixed berry smoothie recipe is delicious & nutritious! It only takes 5 ingredients and 5 minutes to make this healthy banana berry smoothie, which can be enjoyed as a quick breakfast or afternoon snack! It’s dairy-free, and you can even add protein powder and spinach for an extra nutrition boost.

I drink a smoothie every morning. Starting my day with a healthy dose of fruits, protein and greens is just the best. This mixed berry smoothie is one of my favorites (along with this green smoothie, mango smoothie, and strawberry banana smoothie)!

This banana berry smoothie is easy to make – and only takes 5 minutes to blend together. Plus it’s incredibly versatile. Add your favorite vanilla protein powder and a handful of greens to add some extra nutrients!

Berry Smoothie Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

Here are some notes about the ingredients in this banana berry smoothie, as well as possible substitutions.

  • Unsweetened almond milk. Any non-dairy milk works excellently in this recipe. I love using coconut milk for a tropical flavor. You can also use regular dairy milk!
  • Frozen mixed berries. I always have a bag of mixed berries in my freezer to make this berry smoothie recipe! If you come across delicious fresh berries in the summer for a great price, you can always flash freeze them and then store them in an airtight container in the freezer.
  • Frozen banana. If you’re don’t prefer bananas, you could substitute another starchy food like avocado for creaminess, but you will  likely need to add more honey/maple syrup to achieve the proper sweetness.
  • Vanilla extract. You can simply leave out the vanilla, but I love the rich flavor it adds to this frozen berry smoothie.
  • Honey. Maple syrup or agave can be used in place of honey. If your berries are extra-sweet you can omit the sweetener altogether.
  • Vanilla protein powder (optional). I love adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder to my smoothies for a protein boost that keeps me full longer. Orgain Vanilla Bean Protein Powder is my favorite – I always have it stocked in my pantry.
  • Frozen Spinach (optional). If you want to make this a green berry smoothie, simply add some frozen spinach, kale, etc. This is optional!

How to make a mixed berry smoothie

Use a Vitamix

If you’ve been around here for a while then you know I am fiercely loyal to my Vitamix blender. Especially when blending something as thick and creamy as a frozen berry smoothie, using a Vitamix blender is a must. No other blender on the market is its equal in both power and functionality.

Check out my Vitamix buying guide to learn which blender is right for YOU. I have blended with the Ascent 3500 every for 4 years now. It’s my best friend in the kitchen and I couldn’t live without it! There are always great deals on reconditioned Ascent models!

Add ingredients to the blending container

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients and have your Vitamix ready, add all the ingredients in the order listed in this berry smoothie recipe. It’s important to add the almond milk first to ensure a smooth and even blend.

Blend

Next it’s time to blend! Begin blending on low speed and slowly increase it to high speed. Blend on high speed for about 50 seconds, or until the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps of unblended ingredients.

Note: If you have a blender with a “smoothie” setting, you can simply secure the lid, press the smoothie button, and let the blender do the work for you.

Serve!

Pour the blended berry smoothie into 2-4 glasses and enjoy!

What can you add to smoothies?

I mention that you can add protein powder and spinach to this berry smoothie recipe, but there are so many wonderful, nutrient-rich foods you can add to any smoothie! Here are some suggestions:

  • Nut butters (like this homemade peanut butter or vanilla almond butter) – for a little fat and protein.
  • Chia seeds
  • Collagen protein powder
  • Greens (dandelion greens, kale, spinach, etc).
  • Coconut oil
  • Maca powder

More smoothie recipes

Like I said before, I drink a smoothie every single morning, and have for over a decade. I have a pretty extensive collection of smoothie recipes on my blog (check out my smoothie recipe index), but here are a few favorites worth mentioning!

  • The best green smoothie ever – plus all my tips and tricks for making delicious smoothies and meal prepping smoothies.
  • Chocolate peanut butter green smoothie – tastes like a liquid peanut butter cup but it’s full of greens and protein!
  • Both this pineapple smoothie and this mango smoothie will transport you to some beach, somewhere.
  • Strawberry banana smoothie is a total classic – and it’s healthy!
  • This zucchini smoothie is amazing and loaded with veggies.
  • This pumpkin smoothie tastes like a liquid pumpkin pie but it’s so much healthier and only takes 5 minutes to make!
