    Pumpkin Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions

Let's chat about the ingredients and possible substitutions in this Pumpkin Smoothie recipe.

overhead photo of the ingredients in this pumpkin smoothie recipe
    • Milk. Choose your favorite milk variety to use in this pumpkin smoothie. Whole or 2% milk, Almond milk, coconut milk, etc. Just be aware that the higher the fat content of the variety you choose, the creamier the final product will be.
    • Vanilla Yogurt. I like to use a full-fat, creamy vanilla yogurt like Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt or Siggi's Vanilla Bean yogurt. You can choose your favorite, or use a dairy-free variety to make this pumpkin pie smoothie dairy-free. If you choose an unsweetened yogurt, you may need to add more maple syrup.
    • Pumpkin Puree. Use a pure, unsweetened pumpkin puree either canned or fresh/homemade. Do not use pumpkin pie filling. You can also freeze pumpkin puree in ice cube trays to use in this smoothie recipe to ensure an even thicker, creamier, colder texture.
    • Maple Syrup. Honey can be used in place of maple syrup, but I love the way the maple flavor screams, "fall!"
    • Vanilla extract. I do not recommend omitting the vanilla, as it adds a special flavor to this pumpkin smoothie. You can use vanilla bean seeds or vanilla bean paste if you don't have extract.
    • Pumpkin Pie Spice. Use store bought or make your own with this recipe: homemade pumpkin pie spice.
    • Ground Cinnamon. The higher the quality, the better.
    • Frozen Banana. Using a frozen banana makes a thick and creamy smoothie, I don't recommend changing this ingredient.
    • Ice. Using ice helps thicken up this pumpkin smoothie, feel free to omit if you are using frozen pumpkin and frozen bananas.

How to make a Pumpkin Smoothie

This healthy pumpkin smoothie recipe is so easy to make, but per usual we will walk through the (two) steps together and don't forget to watch the video!

Put ingredients into the blending container

As always, I recommend using a Vitamix Blender (check out my Vitamix buying guide) for the creamiest smoothies. When I create smoothie recipes I always list the ingredients in the order they should be added to the blending container, so please follow the recipe!

    Blend

Next, secure the lid and blend the pumpkin pie smoothie for about 30-60 seconds, or until the mixture is smooth.

    Serve

Pour the pumpkin pie smoothie into 2-4 glasses and serve them immediately.

    Add whipped cream (optional)

If desired, and for an extra special treat, serve this pumpkin smoothie with a swirl of homemade whipped cream and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.

How to Freeze Pumpkin Puree For Smoothies

If you have extra pumpkin puree, I recommend freezing it in ice cube trays. That way you can use the frozen pumpkin in this smoothie for an even thicker, creamier final result.

I'd increase the pumpkin and sweetener to make up for the lack of a banana.

Absolutely delicious. I used the Icelandic vanilla bean yogurt because that’s what I had on hand. So, so good! I like that you also list substitutions in your recipes.

This was excellent! I used cottage cheese instead of greek yogurt, and it was so creamy. Going to freeze more bananas now to make this as an after school snack.
