  • Salted Butter. Unsalted butter & coconut oil are both good substitutes.
  • Granulated sugar. Use organic cane sugar if you’d like.
  • Light brown sugar. Dark brown sugar or coconut sugar are great choices.
  • Mini chocolate chips. I prefer mini chips because they spread well throughout the dough so there’s chocolate in every bite. You can use regular-sized chips, chopped chocolate bars, etc.

Serve

Serve this cookie in a mug nice and warm with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We also love topping it with some homemade whipped cream!

Store

You really shouldn’t need to store this because it’s made to be eaten by one person in a single serving. However, if you don’t finish it, just cover the top of the mug with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for a few seconds.

How long does it take to cook a mug cookie?

45 to 60 seconds depending on the strength of your microwave.

Can I make a mug cookie without eggs?

You can replace the egg yolk with 2 or 3 Tablespoons of heavy cream. It won’t rise the same, but it will taste delicious.

What size mug should I use?

Use a 10 to 12 ounce mug.

Can I bake a mug cookie in the oven instead of the microwave?

Yes! Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 10–12 minutes, or until the top is just barely set and the edges are lightly brown.

How do I make my mug cookie gooey?

Slightly undercook it and use a good amount of chocolate chips and it will be extra gooey.

Can I double the recipe?

I have up to quadrupled this recipe to make them for 4 of my kids at one time. I just cook each one in an individual mug.

What mix-ins can I add to a mug cookie?

Here are some mix-in suggestions:
– Chocolate chips (obviously)
– White chocolate chips
– Chopped peanut butter cups
– Peanut butter chips
– Nuts
