I have been making this Oreo balls recipe for almost 20 years. It’s a simple, no-bake, four-ingredient recipe (including my secret ingredient) that results in an irresistible treat perfect for any holiday.

Oreo truffles are a great no-bake treat to make in the summer, or as a quick and easy addition to your Christmas cookie trays (like these no bake chocolate peanut butter bars and these chocolate peanut butter balls) during the holidays.

You can coat them in milk, dark or white chocolate or use colored candy melts & add sprinkles to make them festive for any occasion.

Oreo Balls Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Oreos. I recommend regular or double stuff Oreos in these Oreo cookie balls. Or, use fun Oreo flavors; golden, mint, birthday cake, etc. You can also use colored cookies during the holidays for a festive twist (topped with fun sprinkles of course). Choose a gluten-free cookie to make them gluten-free.
    • You can also different brand sandwich cookies. We love the Trader Joes  JoJo’s (especially using the peppermint ones at Christmas).
  • Cream Cheese.  Using full-fat cream cheese results in the most delicious, rich Oreo cream cheese balls. however you could use reduced fat if you’d prefer. You can also use vegan cream cheese for a dairy-free version.
  • Vanilla Extract. This ingredient took this Oreo balls recipe from good to wow. Please don’t leave it out! It takes the flavor to the next level. You could also substitute other extracts for unique flavors such as peppermint for the holidays.
  • Semisweet Chocolate.  Use you favorite chocolate to coat these Oreo truffles. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, colored chocolate melting discs for different holidays, etc.

How to make Oreo Balls

These Oreo truffles are so easy to make, but as always, we’ll walk through the process step-by-step to ensure your success. And don’t forget to watch the video .

Make Oreo Crumbs

Put the cookies in a food processor fitted with the “S” blade and process until they reach the texture of fine crumbs.

If you don’t have a food processor, you can place the cookies in a plastic bag and smash them with a rolling pin until they are a fine powder. This is a fun way to let the kids help, although it takes longer and is significantly messier!

Make the Oreo Balls Filling

In the bowl of a standing mixer, or in a large bowl with a hand-held mixer, beat the cream cheese, vanilla and sea salt together until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Once the ingredients are combined well, scrape down the sides and gather the cream cheese mixture to the bottom of the bowl.

Next, add the Oreo crumbs to the cream cheese and beat until combined.

Next, line a large baking tray (or two medium trays) with wax paper. Then use a 1 Tablespoon measuring spoon or cookie scoop to measure and scoop the Oreo truffles.

Then roll into Oreo cookie balls and set them in rows on the prepared baking sheet. Continue until all the Oreo mixture is used.

Freeze

Place the baking sheet lined with Oreo cream cheese balls into the freezer to harden for at least 30 minutes, and up to overnight. If you freeze them longer than 3 hours, cover them in plastic wrap or put them in an airtight container to avoid freezer burn.

Coat in Chocolate

Once the Oreo balls are frozen, melt the chocolate for coating either in the microwave or over a double boiler on the stovetop (preferred because it helps keep the chocolate warm throughout dipping).

Dip hardened Oreo balls into the melted chocolate using a fork. Place back on the wax-paper lined baking sheet to harden.

If desired, sprinkle with crushed Oreos, sprinkles, etc. while the chocolate is still wet and not yet set.

Oreo Balls Recipe FAQs

Here are some commonly asked questions about making Oreo cream cheese balls.

How do you decorate Oreo Truffles?

There are SO many different ways to make these Oreo balls fun and festive for any occasion!
First, you can choose to coat them in colored candy melts to give them a colorful exterior. Think orange for Halloween, red or green for Christmas, pastel colors for Easter, etc.
You can also add toppings to the Oreo truffles immediately after dipping in chocolate before it hardens. Some suggestions are:
A dash of crushed Oreos
your favorite sprinkles
chopped nuts
chopped chocolate
Mini chocolate chips
You can also let the Oreo balls harden and then decorate them with a drizzle extra melted white or dark chocolate or colored candy melts.

Do you have to refrigerate Oreo balls?

If you plan on waiting a few days to eat these Oreo truffles, then yes I recommend storing them in the refrigerator. Refrigerating also helps the chocolate set faster. If you plan to eat them the day they are made, refrigeration is not necessary.

How long do Oreo balls last?

These Oreo cookie balls will last for 3 days at room temperature, 1 week in the refrigerator, and 2 months in the freezer.

  1. 5 stars
I made Oreo truffles for the first time using this recipe on 12/12/2020. The result was great, no issues. I even piped the chocolate drizzle to make a neat design like you did. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture before they all got devoured. But I’ll be making these again soon & will photograph them then.

I didn’t have a food processor, and my cheap blender wasn’t good at crushing the Oreos. So I used my small black & decker food chopper (it’s like a small food processor with a small S-blade). I had to do multiple batches but the results were great.

I also don’t have a stand mixer, so just used a handheld mixer with the two beater attachments.

  2. I love the mixture of the cream and the cookies in Oreos. I think that’s what makes them good for a truffle! :). these are gorgeous Laura!
