I drink a green smoothie every day, and have for almost a decade! So this post, explaining “how to make a green smoothie” with all my tips and tricks has been something I’ve wanted to write since I started this blog! This is a long and comprehensive post and video, so settle in while we get started.

I’ll start by sharing how to meal prep smoothies. I’m always prepared to make a delicious green smoothie in a moment’s notice. Because every minute in the morning before the kids wake up is precious! I don’t want to waste any time measuring protein powder, chopping fruit, etc.

Next, I’ll share my favorite green smoothie recipe! It’s a simple green smoothie for beginners that is naturally sweetened with fruit (no added sugars) and loaded with greens and protein.

How to Meal Prep Green Smoothies

I think that green smoothies are the best when they’re served fresh, straight from the blender. So I meal prep smoothies by having all the ingredients on hand and ready to go. This means I always have my freezer stocked with frozen fruit and greens and pre-portion all of the add-ins like protein powder!

1) Freeze Bananas

In my opinion, bananas are an essential ingredient to make the best green smoothies for both natural sweetness and a creamy texture. So make sure to purchase bananas designated to freeze for smoothies when you go grocery shopping!

Let the bananas ripen then cut them into halves or thirds. Flash freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to an airtight, freezer-friendly container to store!

2) Use frozen fruit & greens

This green smoothie recipe calls for 1 cup of frozen fruit in addition to one frozen banana. Using frozen fruit and greens is key to the thickest, creamiest green smoothies. You’ll notice I do not use ice in any of my smoothie recipes, because it waters down the flavor and gives smoothies an icy texture – which I am not a fan of.

I recommend stocking up on frozen fruit in the winter when produce isn’t readily available. During the summer, purchase seasonal produce on sale and flash freeze it in the same way as the bananas!

Fruit to use in a green smoothie

Here are some suggestions for fruits to use in this green smoothie recipe. In this post I used half mango and half pineapple, which is my favorite combination! Be aware, that if you use darker fruits like blueberries, blackberries, cherries, etc. the color will change and you will likely make a brown smoothie that is delicious but not green in color! 🙂

  • mango
  • pineapple
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • peaches
  • cherries
  • oranges
  • grapefruit

Greens to Use in a Green Smoothie

If you are making this simple green smoothie recipe as a beginner, then I recommend sticking with spinach as the green of choice. I buy large container of spinach or power greens and toss them into the freezer when we get home from our shopping. That way I know the spinach is fresh and that I’m stocked for the months ahead. Here are other suggestions:

  • spinach (try this spinach smoothie too)
  • kale
  • swiss chard
  • romain lettuce
  • beet greens
  • carrot tops
  • collard greens
  • celery

Blend Greens and freeze in cubes

If you don’t have a lot of space in your freezer, you can take the fresh spinach (or other greens of choice) and blend with a small amount of water until the mixture is smooth. Then freeze in ice cube trays and store frozen cubes of greens in an airtight container in the freezer. I used to do this when we lived in a condo and didn’t have an extra freezer in the basement!

3) Pre-portion add-ins

Measuring out the add-ins for my green smoothies has been a game-changer for me! I wake up early and nurse my baby, exercise, shower, eat breakfast and drink my coffee all before my 5 kids wake up for the day. So I have the morning routine down to a science to get the most alone time possible before 7:30 AM!

So, I measure out the smoothie ingredients into these small containers and prepare two weeks worth of smoothies at one time! I even have a drawer right under my Vitamix blender where I store the containers for easy access. All I have to do is pop the lid and dump the ingredients in, no measuring required!

Best Green Smoothie Add-ins

I started putting add-ins into my green smoothie recipes when my third baby was born. A few scoops of nutritional boosters gave me increased energy throughout the day and made the green smoothies taste even better! So here are some of my suggestions!

How to Make a Green Smoothie

Ok, now that we’ve talked about all the delicious ingredients that go into making a green smoothie, let’s actually dive into how to make a green smoothie recipe!

Step 1: Use a Vitamix blender

If you’ve been around my blog for a while then you know that I exclusively blend with a Vitamix (and have for a decade)! So it’s not surprising that I will tell you that the best way to achieve silky smooth green smoothies is to use a Vitamix blender!

I bought my first Vitamix because I was sick of chewing my green smoothies (can anyone else relate)? I wanted a blender that would pulverize anything and everything I put into my smoothies and the Vitamix was the answer.

Check out my Vitamix Buying Guide where I give my exhaustive reasons for choosing a Vitamix blender a decade ago, and my top recommendations about which model to buy!

Step 2: Add Liquid Ingredients

When making a green smoothie, it’s important to always add the liquid ingredients into the blending container first. This ensures the other ingredients don’t get stuck under the blades! It also creates a vortex that pulls everything into the blades for a smooth blend!

Best liquids to use in a green smoothie recipe

I always use some sort of non-dairy milk in my green smoothies because I think it gives them the best taste and texture. However there are many different liquids that could be used:

  • Almond Milk (my personal favorite)
  • Coconut Milk
  • Any percentage of dairy milk
  • Rice Milk
  • Oat Milk
  • Cashew Milk
  • Coconut Water
  • Water (not recommended, but can be used)

Step 3: Add Frozen Greens

Next, add your frozen greens of choice on top of the liquid.

Step 4: Add Frozen Fruit & Add-ins

Putting the frozen fruit on top of the greens helps push all the leaves into the blades and prevents them from sticking to the sides.

Step 5: Blend

Now it’s time to blend our green smoothie! Start blending on low speed and gradually increase to high. Blend on high speed for 50-60 seconds or until the green smoothie is smooth!

Enjoy

Pour the green smoothie into one to four cups and enjoy! In my opinion, this recipe makes two good-sized adult servings or 4 kid servings!

I just made this tonight and wow!! I have found my new breakfast smoothie. My 12 year old daughter said yuck when she saw the green but then tried it. I had to make another one for her! Thank you for sharing it. A new family favorite!

Wow, Laura, I have been searching for a few days that How can I easily make a green smoothie. After reading your idea then I make a green smoothie at my home. You have referred your article on how to easy way to make this recipe.

  3. Okay… so I’m new to this green smoothie thing… 2 cups of spinach* frozen is how many ounces of spinach exactly… the conversion chart I found says 15.9 ounces but that seems like way to much spinach…

    1. Hey! I went ahead and updated the unit conversions to the metric system! On the package of spinach it says 2 cups of spinach is 85 g, or 3 oz spinach. Since the bag I’m looking at contains 9 oz and it has 6 cups of spinach in it, 1 cup of fresh spinach equals 1.5 oz, so 2 cups would equal 3 oz! I hope this helps!

  4. Looks delish! Nice choices thank you from those of us with allergies. Just found out I am allergic to Wheat, tree nuts, soy and Shellfish. All the good stuff!!! Trying to learn the “buzz” words for all this. Having a few things to choose from makes it easier to look up ingredients that you think are ok or can immediately eliminate and still have choices. Makes it easier. There is a ton of learning on my part.

  5. I feel like an idiot! I’ve been a vegetarian/vegan (pizza is an occasional kryptonite) who consumes A LOT of greens; sometimes, however, I buy too much and get busy and end up throwing away a container full here and there.

Total mind-blown. Put them in the freezer. Genius. 🙂 lol

(I guess I had assumed that because they are, well, leafy and don’t have a lot of mass, they wouldn’t keep well in the freezer.)

Suffice it to say I bought a couple of large ‘tubs’ of greens today, one of which went immediately in the freezer!

    Great tip, ma’am!

I love smoothies, and love these time saving ideas, especially the spinach storage idea. I have been using water with cashews (which makes cashew milk) and/ or oatmeal, which makes oat milk. It’s cheaper than buying oat or cashew milk, and doesn’t need to be refrigerated. I wouldn’t try that with a lesser blender, but works well with my Vitamix.

    1. Love that idea Killoran! It’s like making your own cashew or almond milk without needing to store or strain it!! And absolutely only possible in the Vitamix! 😉

      1. Our Ninja worked fine for almond milk, but didn’t come close to the Vitamix we have now. The Ninja wasn’t very good at destroying stuff like a real ninja can, so it ended up in the dump a while ago. The Vitamix on the other hand is the best purchase we ever made.

  7. Great article! Your kids are lucky to get such a healthy start in life! I’ve VitaMixed raw green veggie and fruit smoothies for myself for several years and used recipes from a lot of sources. My concern is that you recommend using spinach almost exclusively. I’m guessing that you’re likely recommending using spinach almost exclusively because with 5 kids it’s easier to grab those bags, and your young children’s tastebuds haven’t acclimated to the more intense and bitter greens yet (dandelion greens, I’m thinkin’ ’bout you!).

From everything I’ve read about using raw leafy greens is that it’s important to rotate among the different greens and not use spinach too much. You all are missing out on great nutrients by ignoring the other greens, some of which are milder, like Swiss Chard, beet greens, and power greens combos with baby versions of multiple kinds of greens. Your children or even other adult beginners will adjust to the taste of the more bitter greens if you gradually start using them. Search “why rotate raw greens in smoothies” for more info. Some of us are more sensitive to anti-nutrients like oxalic acid and goitrogens than others, and rotation is a smart way to get the benefits while minimizing the less-than-desirable effects of concentrated anti-nutrients. To your continued good health!

    1. Hey Barbara! Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! I totally agree! I use many different greens in my smoothie – and list many of the ones you recommend in the post! I also agree that over time a person adjusts to a wider variety of greens – and should definitely experiment with them all! I just recommend starting with spinach on working from there! 💕

      1. Hi, I make my own ‘add-in’ from nuts, pumpkin, flax, sunflower and chi seeds that I grind in bulk so I can save time each morning but never too sure how much I should add in each time. Have you read anything about it?

  8. I realize this is not an exact science but I do have a question about the banana. When you say 1 banana in the recipe itself, are you referring to 2-3 pieces of frozen banana that makes 1 total banana or are you referring to one piece of frozen banana, which is 1/3-1/2 banana? Just curious as it makes a difference in calories and probably taste, as well. Thanks.

    1. Great question! This recipe calls for one full banana…so enough frozen pieces to equal one whole! I will clarify that in the recipe card!

    1. I do!!! It’s so much easier for me to just toss it on the freezer when I’m unloading after a trip to the grocery store!

Love the recipe & tips! Totally agree Vitamix is the best!

To save space in the freezer, I started using Tovolo silicone 1.25” ice cube molds to freeze fresh fruit. Easy to pop out when frozen. Then I stack the cubes into 1/2 gal ziplocks bags with a small piece of wax paper between the rows. Easy to pop the cubes into Vitamix. Saves space in the freezer & easy to organize.
