Pumpkin Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions

Let’s chat about the ingredients and possible substitutions in this Pumpkin Smoothie recipe.

  • Milk. Choose your favorite milk variety to use in this pumpkin smoothie. Whole or 2% milk, Almond milk, coconut milk, etc.
  • Vanilla Yogurt. I suggest a full-fat Icelandic or Greek vanilla yogurt, or try a dairy-free variety. If using unsweetened yogurt, you will likely need to increase the maple syrup.
  • Pumpkin Puree. Use a pure, unsweetened pumpkin puree either canned or fresh/homemade. Do not use pumpkin pie filling. You can also freeze pumpkin puree in ice cube trays to use in this smoothie recipe to ensure an even thicker, creamier, colder texture.
  • Maple Syrup. Honey can be used in place of maple syrup, but I love the way the maple flavor screams, “fall!”
  • Vanilla extract. You can use vanilla bean seeds or vanilla bean paste if you don’t have extract.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice. Use store bought or make your own with this recipe: homemade pumpkin pie spice.
  • Frozen Banana. Using a frozen banana makes a thick and creamy smoothie, I don’t recommend changing this ingredient.
  • Ice. Using ice helps thicken up this pumpkin smoothie, feel free to omit if you are using frozen pumpkin and frozen bananas.

As always, I recommend using a Vitamix Blender (check out my Vitamix buying guide) for the creamiest smoothies. When I create smoothie recipes I always list the ingredients in the order they should be added to the blending container, so please follow the recipe!

Absolutely delicious. I used the Icelandic vanilla bean yogurt because that’s what I had on hand. So, so good! I like that you also list substitutions in your recipes.

This was excellent! I used cottage cheese instead of greek yogurt, and it was so creamy. Going to freeze more bananas now to make this as an after school snack.
