Beet Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions

- Almond milk. Choose your favorite milk – coconut, whole milk, 2%, etc.
- Beets. I opt for cooked beets because I prefer their flavor. You can use raw, peeled beets if you’d prefer. I keep these cooked beets on hand in the fridge just to make this recipe.
- Vanilla Greek yogurt. Instead of using vanilla yogurt, you can use ½ cup regular Greek yogurt, 3 Tablespoons honey, and ½ tsp vanilla.
- Frozen banana. Since the beets aren’t frozen, you need to use frozen fruit for a thick, creamy smoothie.
- Frozen berries. Use red berries to keep it pink, like strawberries and raspberries. Or you can use blueberries or blackberries, but they will change the color.
- Honey. If you don’t like sweet smoothies, you can omit it or add to taste. Maple syrup also works.

How to Make a Beet and Fruit Smoothie
Let’s walk through this recipe together step-by-step, and don’t forget to watch the video for additional help!
Begin by putting the ingredients into the blending container of a high-powered blender in the order listed in the recipe. It’s important to add the liquid first for easy blending.

I always add the honey last so that it doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of the blender and so that it does get fully incorporated into the smoothie.
Additional Mix-Ins
You can add some nutritional boosters to this recipe at this point. Here are some suggestions:
- 1 Tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 Tablespoon vanllia protein powder or collagen protein powder
- 1 cup of greens (spinach, kale, etc)
- Bee pollen
- Ground flaxseed

Once all the ingredients are in the blending container, blend, starting on low speed and quickly increasing to high speed for 45 to 60 seconds, or until the mixture is smooth and thick. Be careful not to over-blend, or it will become thin.

Serve
Pour into two to four classes (depending on your preferences) and serve immediately.

Store/Freeze
I suggest drinking this beet and fruit smoothie right away. However, you could freeze it in a glass jar for up to 1 month. Make sure to leave room at the top of the jar for the smoothie to expand as it freezes. Then thaw it overnight in the fridge before drinking.
