It’s dairy-free, vegan and loaded with protein!

I have told you before that I am a creature of habit. I adore mornings. I wake up, workout, clean up, then eat breakfast!  Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day because I eat one of these breakfast bars and drink this Peanut Butter Chocolate Green Smoothie. After a good workout, eating a hearty breakfast to refuel before my mommy duties for the day begin is absolutely critical!

And this smoothie does NOT disappoint. Coming in at 300 calories, it has 29 g protein, 12 g of fiber, is loaded with potassium & vitamins B-12, A & C and delivers 47% of the daily recommended amount of iron!

I made thisPeanut Butter Chocolate Green Smoothie with So Delicious Organic Unsweetened Almondmilk! I love that the cashew/almond blend is creamy and slightly sweet without any added sugar! Plus, it has a laundry list of qualities that are important to me when choosing dairy-free milk! This variety is organic {<~love}, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, carrageenan-free, vegan certified, and has no preservatives! Plus it comes in at only 35 calories per serving! All of these added up is pretty awesome if you ask me!

A note about protein powder: 

I started adding chocolate protein powder to this Peanut Butter Chocolate Green Smoothie recipe when my third baby was born. (I always use plant-based/vegan varieties). Nursing and chasing two other kids around left me completely exhausted. I realized that in order to function I needed to increase my protein intake.

Adding a scoop of protein powder not only improved and intensified the chocolate flavor (yay), but it also gave me increased energy throughout the day. And now that I have four kids to feed, teach, snuggle and love on all day long, the protein powder in this smoothie is an absolute must!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Green Smoothie: Method

This smoothie is super easy! You literally just add all the ingredients to your blender, blend and enjoy! Here are a few tips to create the perfect smoothie every time!

Frozen ingredients. If you like super cold, creamy, thick smoothies then I suggest storing your greens and bananas in the freezer!  Using frozen fruits and vegetables results in an ultra-creamy consistency without adding ice, which can water down the flavor.

Use a good blenderNo one wants to have to chew their smoothie! Using a high-powered blender is absolutely crucial if you plan on drinking smoothies as a regular part of your healthy lifestyle! I use mine multiple times every day, and couldn’t live without it in my kitchen!

Drink immediately. This smoothie is best enjoyed right away! When I was a teacher I would blend it up before I left for the gym/work, and put it in a cup that was made to keep drinks cold forever. It lasted really well in that travel cup because it was kept cold! Just don’t leave it out at room temperature too long before drinking!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Green Smoothie: Substitutions 

I have made this recipe every day for years, so I have the ingredients and amounts down to a science! But, if you must tinker with the recipe, here are a few possible substitutions!

Almond milk. While I used So Delicious’ Organic Unsweetened variety, they also have organic vanilla and original almond milk options too!

Peanut butter powder. love using powered peanut butter because it makes it much easier to clean the container of my blender! It’s an absolute pantry staple for me, but if that isn’t the case for you, 1 TBS of regular peanut butter is a super delicious substitution (and a little richer tasting). You could also substitute almond butter or cashew butter if you’d like to make this recipe paleo!

Spinach. I have (multiple) giant 4 LB bags of spinach on hand in my freezer at all times, for the sole purpose of making smoothies! Feel free to substitute your favorite greens in this recipe. I have used 3 cups of spinach and 1 cup of kale and love that combination too! Spinach is the best if you do not want to taste the greens at all!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Green Smoothie

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients to the container of your Vitamix or other high-powered blender in order listed.
  2. Turn blender on low and slowly increase to high speed.
  3. Blend until smooth (about 50-60 seconds).
  4. Pour into glass and ENJOY!

Recipe Notes

*If you prefer a darker chocolate flavor use 1 TBS cocoa powder! I prefer ½ TBS in this recipe! **sometimes I use 3 cups spinach & 1 cup kale! ***Optional add-ins: scoop of collagen peptides, maca powder, etc.
