Zucchini Smoothie in a glass

We always grow zucchini in our garden because it’s one of my favorite vegetables.

I put it in just about everything. From muffins to cookies to fritters and everything in between.

And since smoothies are my favorite breakfast, I created the best zucchini smoothie recipe as a great way to use up a bumper crop of zucchini!

This zucchini smoothie with spinach is a healthy breakfast that’s loaded with protein and nutrients, and tastes like a yummy vanilla & cinnamon milkshake! Plus it’s made with only 7 ingredients in less than 5 minutes.

Zucchini Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions

use frozen ingredients

If you like cold, creamy, thick smoothies then I suggest storing your greens and bananas in the freezer.  Using frozen fruits and vegetables results in an ultra-creamy consistency without adding ice, which can water down the flavor.

  • Almond milk. choose your favorite milk: whole, 2%, coconut milk, etc.
  • Zucchini. I suggest using fresh shredded or sliced zucchini. You can also freeze grated or chopped zucchini to use in this recipe.
  • Spinach. Any greens work well in this recipe. I have used half spinach half kale with great results. (check out my green smoothie and spinach smoothie recipes).
  • Frozen Banana. Adds extra sweetness and creaminess. Using frozen also thickens the smoothie.
  • Vanilla protein powder.  this can be omitted, but it adds flavor and nutrition. Choose your favorite vanilla protein powder. For a flavorless protein boost, add a scoop of collagen.

How to Make a Zucchini Smoothie

To make this zucchini smoothie recipe, simply put the ingredients in the order listed in the blending container and blend until smooth.

Use a Vitamix

For the best smoothies, use a high-powered blender. My highest recommendation is a Vitamix.

Then, serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Just made as the final smoothie on a 3-day smoothie cleanse. A friend mentioned adding zucchini in lieu of bananas so I was looking up recipes and came across this one. I added some avocado for more green and creaminess (plus to use up the other half I saved from this morning lol) and it was very tasty. I was not sure how everything would taste together but even for it being a green smoothie it is sweet and has a nice creamy taste to it. Will make again.

    1. Thank you Kristen! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Adding avocado to anything is always a great choice! 😉

I stumbled upon this recipe, while planning to make a cucumber smoothie. Once I had cut up the zucchini ( which I thought was a cucumber), I googled ‘can I use Zucchini in a smoothie’ , and YOUR recipe came up!!
Saved my day!! So, I had all other ingredients on hand, went ahead and made it, and I must say, verrrrrry delicious indeed!! I cut back a little on almond milk and added 8 ice cubes to make up for fact that my spinach was fresh not frozen!
    Thank you for sharing !

  3. Before I cut up the massive amounts of zucchins and freeze, I wanted to find out that if I’m using a vitamix, do I need to shred the zucchini for smoothies. Wouldn’t I be ok with cutting into 1/2 inch chunks?

SO yummy!!! I have never thought to put zucchini in a smoothie – so I was a little skeptical, and very pleasantly surprised that it was delicious!! I also added a Tbsp of chia seeds in mine. Thanks for a new go-to recipe!

Adding zucchini to smoothies is a game changer! It takes the creaminess factor to a whole new level. Thanks for the recipe!

  6. This is what my sister has been talking about. Would love to try this smoothie as it’s so healthy. Thank you for sharing this.

    1. Oh heavens no!! That was a major typo that I did not catch before posting! The total carb count is 17.3! 😉

  7. I love the picture of Bethany with the smoothie. I think it’s definitely a good tip to drink the smoothie right away, because I’ve definitely made the mistake of not doing that, and it ends up really sludgy. O_O
